Subject: Plea for help: Scifinder and ChemDraw

I'm hoping one of you very knowledgeable chemistry librarians can help me
with a patron's question. She wants to be able to copy structures she finds
using SciFinder Scholar into ChemDraw and then, using ChemDraw, be able to
manipulate bonds or to make a flat structure look like a 3-D representation.

She does not want RTF format as that can not be manipulated.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks - Buffy

Buffy,

You might be able to accomplish this by selecting ChemDraw as your
clipboard format under "Preferences". To change this or other
preferences, click on the "Prefs" button at the top of the SFS window.
Click on the Drawing tab to make the ChemDraw selection. Unfortunately
I do not have ChemDraw, so I can't verify this.

Dear Buffy,

Emily is exactly right. I confirmed this with CAS. Simply open the
Scifinder Preferences, and under the Drawing tab there is a Clipboard
Formats option that you can set to ChemDraw. Alternatively, you ca use
the Save As command in the Scifinder File menu to save the structure as
a Molfile that can be opened in ChemDraw.

What you describe is copying to and from the structure drawing window in
Scifinder and ChemDraw. What was wanted was a way to cut and paste from
the results of a search in Scifinder into Chemdraw. This does
not work. You can cut and paste a structure from the Scifinder results
into programs like Word. I thought that you could cut a structure from
the Scifinder results and paste it into the drawing window of Scifinder. I
am mistaken what you can do is copy the registry number of a hit in the
search results window and automatically paste the associate structure into
the drawing window of Scifinder. You could then copy this one structure
into ChemDraw. However you would have to restart your scifinder
search from the beginning to get the next structure. Independent of the
problem at hand, the ability to cut the registry number and paste the
structure into the Scifinder drawing window is a useful hint that I learned
on this listserv. The Clide Lite program looks useful but it is likely
too costly for a user who does not spend many hours a week searching
Scifinder or related structural databases
