Properties of Langmuir Monolayers.
Physical chemistry of viruses.
A recurrent theme in their research is the study of physical systems far from equilibrium. Much of this work centers on the kinetics of phase transitions. How do new phases form in a system that was originally homogeneous and, once having been formed, how do the regions of new phase grow? Such questions are closely connected to fundamental problems in metastability, surface phenomena, and transport; they also have a bearing on topics of practical importance in materials research -- the preparation and characteristics of composites and alloys.
Most of their work is experimental. They employ a variety of techniques including laser light scattering, neutron reflectivity, fluorescence microscopy, and image analysis; computer simulations are also an effective tool.
They have recently been focusing on Langmuir monolayers. These are monomolecular films of amphiphilic molecules such as fatty acids and phospholipids, which, because they have a hydrophilic "head" and a hydrophobic "tail", form two-dimensional phases at the air/water interface. Such films display a dazzling variety of patterns -- fractals, dendrites, helices, stripes, hexagonal lattices -- as they undergo transitions from one two-dimensional phase to another. To understand this behavior they must understand how the conformations of the chain molecules change as the film is compressed and how the chains interact. These are just the molecular properties that make such monolayers prototypes for bilayers of amphiphiles that are common in biological systems.
Charles M. Knobler was honored by Fulbright Fellow, Alexander von Humboldt Senior Fellow, Fellow of American Physical Society, and granted to Herbert Newby McCoy Award, UCLA Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Award, etc.
