ASM International is the society for materials engineers and scientists, a worldwide network dedicated to advancing industry, technology and applications of metals and materials.Since its founding in 1913, ASM International has existed to provide a means for exchanging information and professional interaction. Today, its role has expanded to serve the technical interests of metals and materials professionals all over the world - but providing information and interaction remains its main purpose.
The society began as a small club in Detroit with fewer than 20 members. Today it is the world's leading society for materials information, with 40,000 members in nearly 100 countries.
Its first handbook was a pocket-sized loose-leaf binder containing a few hundred data sheets. Today, its handbook's 18 volumes and more than 20,000 pages represent the most frequently used references in the materials professions.
Originally, there were only two chapters providing opportunities for local information exchange and networking. Today, there are more than 160.
From 1913 to the present, the history of ASM International has been a story of vision, cooperation and hard work. One thing has always remained constant: the society has concentrated on serving the individual in the most effective way possible.
