Their research program focuses on materials and nanoscale chemistry. One of their research areas involves using the photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) of semiconductors to develop new classes of chemical sensors and biosensors. Adsorption of molecules onto the surface of a semiconductor can alter the electric field inside the solid, perturbing the solid's photoluminescence or electroluminescence intensity. Because these adducts are often weak, they can serve as the basis for on-line sensors. Ongoing efforts include investigating the coordination chemistry of the semiconductor surface to develop speed, selectivity, and sensitivity; optimizing the response of the solid through band gap engineering principles; and miniaturizing the sensor using microelectronics facilities available on campus to create completely integrated sensor-on-a-chip structures. Nanoscale shape memory alloys are being developed in a collaboration with engineering colleagues. They make extensive use of instrumentation available through the Department of Chemistry and the campus Materials Science Center.
